Franche-Comte is a region and historical province in eastern France, which includes most of the French portion of the Jura mountain range and the plateau of the upper Saone River. It comprises the departments of Jura, Doubs, Haute-Saone, and Territoire de Belfort. The pine forests in the Jura and the pastures for stock raising are important to the area's economy. A section of the Jura slopes is planted with grapes. The Franche-Comte is famous for its Gruyere cheese and its watches and clocks.
